Intern, Legal (Spring 2018) - USA Football (Indianapolis, IN)

Summary: The legal internship program with USA Football offers a law school student the unique opportunity to gain real world experience working for a sports entity. As the legal intern for football’s national governing body in the United States, you will be asked to perform a wide variety of tasks in support of the organization’s two-person legal team. The legal intern will be asked to keep up with the demands of a fast-paced work environment while being provided an insider’s perspective on the legal operations of a sports organization.        

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Draft and review various legal agreements including licensing agreements, sponsorship agreements, facility agreements, etc.
  • Research and draft legal memoranda on various topics
  • Prepare policy documents that adopt best practices for events, programs, and general administration
  • Analyze legal and risk management issues 

Education: Completion of at least two years of law school (required)

Preferred Skills:

  • Completion of a contract drafting course is preferred
  • Interest in sports law, non-profit law, health law, or related areas is a plus
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and present analysis


  • Internship begins January 8, 2018 and ends April 27, 2018
  • Internship is full-time (40 hours/week)
  • Internships are unpaid, with a $1000 nominal monthly stipend, plus parking allowance
  • Reports to Corporate Counsel 
  • Position will be located at USA Football’s headquarters based in Indianapolis, IN
  • Must secure housing and transportation in Indianapolis 
  • USA Football supports interns seeking academic credit
  • Interns must identify learning goals and work with supervisor to achieve goals
    • Examine the organization and its industry/environment
    • Analyze and interpret functions and responsibilities
    • Observe professionals in various roles and participate with them where appropriate
    • Apply academic learning to practical and professional work experiences
    • Learn how to perform specific tasks
