Finance: Controller/Director of Finance
Assistant Controller - Washington Redskins (Ashburn, VA)

The Washington Redskins are hiring an Assistant Controller who will be responsible for performing and managing varied accounting functions. Functions include but are not limited to general ledger account reconciliations, recording and posting entries in the financial system, preparation of sales tax returns, preparation of monthly financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and established company polices, and perform ad-hoc accounting projects as requested by management.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for internal controls over the monthly close processes. Ensure that effective controls and efficient procedures are in place to safeguard company assets and prepare documentation of such controls
  • Prepare monthly financial closing journal entries
  • Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts
  • Prepare monthly account roll forwards and balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Distribute monthly P&L statements to department managers
  • Prepare and analyze departmental financial statements
  • Provide requested information to auditors, consultants, and others on audits and other matters requiring coordination
  • Coordinate and prepare financial schedules required for NFL reporting
  • Compile data and prepare monthly sales tax returns
  • Provide A/R analysis and assist with collections
  • Support financial planning and analysis department
  • Other projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance
  • CPA is a plus
  • 3+ years accounting experience
  • Prior experience should include general ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, and interaction with external auditors or participation on external audit engagements

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with accounting/financial software
  • Knowledge of Epicor and FRx is a plus
  • Solid understanding of general accounting principles
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate financial data and effectively communicate verbally and in writing
  • Strong administrative and organization skills with attention to detail and follow-up required

The Washington Redskins Communications Department offers summer, season-long and spring internships.  The internships are designed for either undergraduate or graduate students and are unpaid positions.  All candidates must be able to receive course-credit for the internship.  The intern will have the opportunity to learn about the responsibilities of a National Football League communications staff while working as a member of the department and assisting in its day-to-day functions. 

            Interns must be able to work extended hours including some nights and weekends.  A background in public/media relations or sports management is strongly encouraged.  Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills.  The intern will be required to participate in a mandatory background check and drug testing at the beginning of the internship. 

Spring Internship Responsibilities (January – May)

  • Oversee daily newspaper clips and their distribution.
  • Help with production and editing of the team’s media guide.
  • Facilitate interviews with local media during the Draft, Mini Camp and OTAs.
  • Assist in transcribing quotes during the Draft, Mini Camp and OTAs.
  • Research statistical information for management, coaches, scouts and internal department as needed.

Time Requirements:

       Create FedExField Suite presentations for prospects.

       Help to maintain office organization with properly labeling folders and binders, contract distribution, updating necessary suite listing and availability charts.

       Maintain and update the Suites/Hospitality memorabilia inventory storage room.

       Attend networking events at Redskins Park and FedExField.

       If necessary help with the execution of Washington Redskins home games or special events hosted at FedExField.

       Help with the contacting of prospects to arrange and confirm meetings and/or event attendance.

       Draft letters to company executives who view our website in order to follow up on their expressed interest.

Our team sells advertising across popular sports talk shows including,  Tony Kornheiser, The Sports Fix with Thom Loverro and Kevin Sheehan, Inside the Locker Room with Doc Walker and Brian Mitchell, and The Drive with Chris Cooley and Steve Czaban, as well as play-by-play including Washington Redskins Football, Baltimore Orioles Baseball, University of Maryland Football and Basketball, University of Virginia Football and Basketball and Others. Candidate must be a self-starter with a consultative, proactive sales approach who can generate new business while expanding the existing base of client advertisers.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Job emphasis is on creating new business and upselling existing account lists.
  2. Proactively prospecting and qualifying potential new advertising accounts.
  3. Sell advertising and sponsorship opportunities on the Redskins Radio Network, ESPN 980, espn980.com and SportsTalk 570.
  4. Present persuasive sales presentations to multi levels of targeted organizations.
  5. Comfort in successfully closing accounts in excess of $50,000 annually.
  6. Attain Quota assignment in excess of $1 Million.

 Requirements: 

  1. Minimum of two to three years of advertising sales experience with proven success.
  2. Determination when facing resistance
  3. Desire to influence the thinking of others and gain agreement via logic and alternatives
  4. Desire to be highly successful
  5. A desire to be of service to others and help them succeed
  6. Possess strong long and short term objectives and goals
  7. Have the capacity to sense and establish a customer’s needs
  8. High ethics and does what is right
  9. Outstanding computer skills including solid knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  10. A four year college degree, preferably in Marketing and/or Advertising.
