Football Operations: Coach
Heads Up Football Master Trainer - USA Football (Nationwide, IN)

Job Description:

USA Football seeks qualified coaches to serve in the role of a Heads Up Football Master Trainer (MT). The MT will support and help conduct Player Safety Coach (PSC) Clinics for USA Football’s Heads Up Football program in effort to build a better, safer game. In addition, MTs will be given additional opportunities to conduct training events for youth and high school programs within their community and region.

About Heads Up Football:

Heads up Football is a program developed by USA Football and supported by the NFL to enhance player safety in youth and high school football programs throughout the country. Participating youth leagues and High School programs will nominate a Player Safety Coach (PSC) whose responsibility it is to enhance the standard of coaching within their organization. Every PSC will be required to attend a clinic that is conducted by one of USA Football’s Master Trainers and then implement the program material within their organization. The program elements include: Heads Up Tackling, Heads Up Blocking, Sudden Cardiac, Concussion Awareness & Management, Heat Emergency Preparedness and Proper Equipment Fitting.

The Player Safety Coach will then integrate these elements into their organization by taking the following measures:

  • Require all youth coaches and high school coaches to complete USA Football’s Level 1 or High School Coach Certification online course
  • Conduct a Heads Up Football Head Coaches Clinic and attend one of their preseason practices
  • Require all head coaches to conduct a Heads Up Football Safety Meeting for all parents and players
  • Encourage all parents and players to become free members of USA Football and complete the Heads Up Football Safety course
  • Monitor coaches and their efforts to integrate these best practices throughout the season

Master Trainer Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the training of PSCs:  teach USA Football’s Heads Up Tackling and Heads Up Blocking Training System; educate coaches and parents on CDC Concussion Awareness and Management, Heat Emergency Preparedness, and Sudden Cardiac awareness; and, assess PSC’s ability to execute the Heads Up Coaches Clinic and Heads Up Safety Clinic
  • Work with USA Football staff to identify a local facility to conduct Player Safety Coach Clinics.  This requires a classroom, audio visual equipment, and a football field.  
  • Check-in all PSCs who attend the clinic and provide a final roster back to USA Football along with a written assessment that includes any person who left early or you were not confident they could do the job as a PSC
  • Serve as a clinician at other Heads Up Football events such as Clinics at NFL/college sites and private Heads Up Football tackling clinics
  • Conduct league visits to observe how the program is being implemented

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Coaching experience at the high school, college or professional level
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, specifically around teaching and interacting with coaches
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Candidate must follow the curriculum and materials provided by USA Football

Requirements:

  • Complete and pass USA Football background check
  • Register for complimentary USA Football coach membership and complete High School Certification
  • Participate in USA Football Master Trainer continuing education opportunities conducted by USA Football.
  • With advance notice, available to participate in Player Safety Coach Clinics (usually in your region)

Additional Opportunities for Master Trainers:

  • Conduct Heads Up Football practice observations
  • Conduct additional Heads Up Football Private Tackling clinics
  • Conduct NFL/USA Football Mom’s Clinic
  • Conduct USA Football Informational Session

MTs will be compensated for each PSC Clinic or other event worked.

USA Football will reimburse reasonable travel expenses in accordance with its travel policy.

In addition, AMTs will be given additional opportunities to conduct training events for youth and high school programs within their community and region.
